In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. – Psalm 18:6
I once had to teach an eighth grade math class in a home economics classroom. This created some challenging situations. One day a boy had to make up a short, simple math quiz. It was from the textbook, so I just wrote down on a piece of paper that I found in the classroom, the page number and problems. The boy was a good student and I figured that he would be done in five or ten minutes. However, after 20 minutes he still was not done and was looking confused and frustrated. When I asked if he was done, he said that he didn’t understand what to do. I noticed when I looked down that he had inadvertently turned the paper over. Instead of problems from the textbook, it was a recipe to make crescent rolls. Once I told him to turn the paper over, he finished the quiz in five minutes.
This incident reminded me how when confronted with difficulties and confusion in my own life, I just sit there and try to deal with the problems myself. If I would only first go to God for help, the problem might be as easily solved as just turning over the paper.
“Dear Lord, when we have problems, let us turn to you first for the help we need.”
